In a nuclear reactor, highly energetic neutrons and gamma rays are emitted simultaneously with the fission event the fission fragments formed are highly radioactive nuclides that emit α and β radiations. If the chain reaction is not controlled, the result will be an explosion due to the fast increase in the energy released.

A fast-neutron reactor is a category of a nuclear reactor in which the fission chain reaction is sustained by fast neutrons. A breeder reactor is associated specifically with nuclear power plants only.
