# UPPCL JE 2016 Electrical question paper with Explanation (Morning Shift)

Ques 51. Resistance can be measured by:

1. Ohmmeters
2. Resistance bridges
3. Wattmeter
4. Ampere-hour Meters

Which one of the following is correct?

1. Only 1 and 2
2. Only 1 and 3
3. Only 2, 3 and 4
4. Only 2 and 3

Resistance is measured in ohm and the device used for measuring the resistance is called as Ohmmeter. As the value of the resistance can range from a few ohms upto million of ohms the ohmmeters also have the range capable of measuring this.

Another method of measuring the resistance by using multimeter and Resistance Bridge such as Wheatstone bridge.A Wheatstone bridge is an electrical circuit used to measure an unknown electrical resistance by balancing two legs of a bridge circuit, one leg of which includes the unknown component.

Ques 52. Talking about the cable insulating materials, the temperature and voltage resisting capacity is the least in case of

1. Rubber
2. Gutta Percha
3. PVC
4. VIR

Gutta-percha consists primarily of the polymer of trans-1,4-isoprene. It is a structural isomer of natural rubber, which is cis-1,4-polyisoprene, and the structure of gutta-percha means that it has greater linearity and crystallizes more readily than natural rubber. These features mean that gutta-percha is harder, less tough and more brittle than its structural isomer.

At room temperature, gutta-percha is a rigid material, but it softens slightly a 25-30°C and generally, becomes pliable and capable of taking up the shape when heated above this temperature range Gutta-percha changes its composition on aging, becoming more brittle and less elastic due to oxidation.

Ques 53. Which of the following acts as regulating reservoir?

1. Tail race
2. Surge tank
3. Forebay
4. Penstock

Forebay: Forebay serves as a regulating reservoir storing water temporarily such that during the light load, it stores water temporarily and it provides water during increased load. Thus, the forebay can be considered as a surge reservoir just above the intake. The water from the main reservoir is distributed to various penstocks leading to the turbine through the forebay. No forebay is required for a plant located just at the base of the dam. The storage reservoir itself regulates the water with the variation of the system load. However, a forebay is provided in a plant situated away from the storage reservoir.

Ques 54. In a 2-pole DC generator having duplex lap winding, the number of armature parallel paths is:

1. 8
2. 4
3. 6
4. 2

In duplex lap winding the number of parallel paths is twice to the number of poles. Hence the number of poles is 4.

Ques 55. An electrical appliance is rated as 220 V, 5 kW A.C. Here the value of 220 V refers to

1. Maximum value
2. Minimum value
3. RMS value
4. Average value

In AC system, we can’t take average value because average value is equal to zero over a period in AC.

So now to calculate different parameters like voltage, current, etc we need RMS value. This is the reason why we use RMS quantities while dealing with AC.

Ques 56. Which of the following device is used in DC drive?

1. DIAC
2. Diode
3. TRIAC
4. Thyristor

A thyristor drive is a motor drive circuit where AC supply current is regulated by a thyristor phase control to provide the variable voltage to a DC motor.

With the introduction of Thyristor or Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) as a power switching device in the sixties, and later the arrival of Gate Turn-Off (GTO) thyristor, bridge rectifiers (converters) and choppers fed from ac and dc supply respectively are used for speed control of dc motors. Choppers using GTOs are now preferred for high power dc drives as these devices can be turned off by proper signals applied to the gate. This is unlike thyristors, which can only be turned on by gate signal i.e. cannot be turned off by the gate signal.

Ques 57. Power is to be transmitted over a large distance say 200 Km. The requisite transmission voltage must be

1. 66 kV
2. 11 kV
3. 33 kV
4. 132 kV

In this case, the line length is more than 160 Km, therefore, it is a long transmission line and the line voltage requires is greater than 100 kV.

Ques 58. If ‘S” denotes slip and ‘Ns’ denotes synchronous speed, then the actual running speed of an induction motor is given by

1. S.Ns
2. 1 – Ns
3. Ns
4. (1 – S)Ns

Slip of an Induction motor is given as

$\begin{array}{l}S = \frac{{{N_s} - {N_r}}}{{{N_s}}} = \frac{{{N_s}}}{{{N_s}}} - \frac{{{N_r}}}{{{N_s}}}\\\\{N_r} = {N_s}(1 - s)\end{array}$

Ques 59. _______ is a property of differentially compound DC motor.

1. Variable speed
2. Low starting torque
3. High starting torque

The ratio of starting torque to full load torque is least in Differential Compound Motor

• In the differential compound, motor two field windings i.e shunt and series windings oppose each other.
• This cause a reduction in flux and consequences decrease in a torque.

Ques 60. The voltage limit of slip ring induction motor is

1. 1.5 kV
2. 11 kV
3. 1 kV
4. 250 kV

The rated voltage of slip ring induction motor is: 380v~760v,  3.3KV, 6.6KV, 10KV, 11KV

The power range of slip ring induction motor is: 100kw-10000kw
