Compound motors are used to drive machines that require a relatively constant speed under varying loads. They are frequently used on machines that require the application of heavy loads for very short periods of time, such as presses, shears, compressors, reciprocating tools, and elevators. Compound motors are also used when it is desired to protect the motor by causing it to decrease in speed under heavy loads.
